The Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU) has launched Rezum Water Vapor Therapy, a groundbreaking treatment for prostate enlargement, offering a minimally invasive solution without the sexual health side effects often associated with medications or surgery.
Dr. C. Mallikarjuna, Managing Director and Chief Consultant Urologist at AINU, highlighted the benefits of this innovative therapy during the launch event, where he was joined by Senior Consultant Urologist Dr. Syed Md. Ghouse and Consultant Urologist Dr. Vijay Kumar Sarma Madduri.
“Rezum Water Vapor Therapy utilises steam to shrink excess prostate tissue causing urinary issues. This outpatient procedure, performed under local anaesthesia, delivers results in as little as two weeks and eliminates risks like erectile dysfunction and ejaculation problems,” explained Dr. Mallikarjuna.
Unlike traditional treatments that require stopping blood-thinning medications or pose risks for heart patients, Rezum minimises such concerns. Patients typically experience a quick recovery, needing only a short course of antibiotics, pain relievers, and a catheter for a maximum of ten days.
The therapy is particularly effective for young to middle-aged patients with moderate prostate issues. However, it may not be suitable for very large prostates or those with severe complications. Studies indicate only 10 per cent of patients treated with Rezum may require surgery within 10–15 years.
AINU CEO Sandeep Guduru remarked, “As the first in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh to offer Rezum therapy, AINU is proud to expand treatment options for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), especially for patients with comorbidities. This is a crucial step toward ensuring access to advanced, patient-centric care.”
