India recorded an unprecedented three-digit growth in patent applications in the last fiscal year, with approximately 92,000 applications filed, announced Prof. (Dr.) Unnat P. Pandit, Controller General of Patents, Designs, and Trademarks (CGPDTM). Speaking at the ASSOCHAM IP Excellence Awards and Summit in New Delhi, Dr. Pandit emphasised India's emergence as a hub for innovation and intellectual property (IP).
Dr. Pandit highlighted the efficiency of India’s patent office in processing applications and granting IP rights, reflecting the rising quality and global relevance of innovations. “Every six minutes, a new invention seeks intellectual property protection in India. As an IP-friendly nation, we are updating guidelines to promote IP-driven solutions that expand businesses and address societal needs,” he stated.
India’s growing prominence is underpinned by a robust legal framework and initiatives like Atmanirbhar Bharat, fostering a domestic innovation ecosystem. Dr. Pandit noted, “Resident registrations in patents and trademarks are on the rise, showcasing a shift toward local innovation. This development enhances the competitive edge of Indian businesses in both domestic and international markets.”
ASSOCHAM National Council on IPR Chairperson Pravin Anand lauded India’s ascent to 39th position in the Innovation Index 2024. “India has become a global destination for Standard Essential Patent (SEP) litigation and handles complex cases with ease. Our focus on both quality and quantity in IP filings solidifies our position as a leader in the global patent ecosystem,” he remarked.
Hiroyuki Nakano, Senior Director (Intellectual Property Rights) & Regional Intellectual Property Attaché for South Asia, JETRO, highlighted India’s evolving IP landscape. “India’s strong legal framework and recent revisions are elevating the country’s prominence in the global patent ecosystem,” he said.
The event also featured the release of a joint knowledge report on Geographical Indications by ASSOCHAM and Remfry & Sagar, showcasing India’s commitment to advancing its IP capabilities.
India’s rapid progress in IP reflects its vision of becoming a technology-driven economy, paving the way for a Viksit Bharat.
