They start taking all precautions before conception to ensure that both mother and child remain healthy. Health of baby and mother is of paramount importance.

1. Pre-conception Counselling
When you are thinking of planning a pregnancy, visit a gynaecologist and discuss about your menstrual health, if there are irregular periods or any other issue, you must discuss about it to track your fertile days. Discuss about the medications you have been taking for certain health issues, including diabetes, hypertension, thyroid or any other. Your doctor will switch you to safer medications.
2. Pre-Natal check-ups
During the pre-natal check-ups, certain pre-pregnancy check-ups are done, based on the medical history of the parents-to-be, by gathering information of family history including diabetes, hypertension, genetic diseases, cancer etc. Based on that, some tests are conducted, including blood tests like hemoglobin (Hb), blood sugar, TSH (Thyroid test), pap smear and tests for Sexually transmitted diseases will be done.
3. Pre-natal multivitamins
It’s time to stop using any kind of contraception or birth control pills and start taking supplements including folic acid supplements to prevent neural tube defects in the baby. However, follow the advice of your gynecologist and take medication as suggested by the expert. Every person had=s different medications as per the requirement of the body.
4. Regular Exercise
Hormonal disturbances, obesity can prevent ovulation in women hence causing trouble in conception. It is suggested to keep yourself physically active and do exercise regularly to avoid any unnecessary weight gain. Keep your weight under check. Many pregnancy complications are overcome if pre – pregnancy weight is normal.
5. Healthy diet
Keep a close eye on what you eat. Eat healthy to stay healthy. It will help to reduce a lot of pregnancy complications. Remember, that what you eat, your baby will get a portion of that. Eat right and stay fit. This will keep your baby healthy too.
6. Say NO to smoking and alcoholic drinks
Smoking and drinking increases the chances of growth restriction and miscarriages. There is nothing called safe amount of smoke or alcohol. Smoking can reduce ovarian function. It is safest to avoid these completely when you are trying to conceive and during pregnancy also.
7. Vaccination
Its time to get vaccinated. Covid-19 vaccination is safe to take before or during pregnancy. It is recommended by experts to take both shots of Covid-19 before or during pregnancy.
8. Get good sleep
Good sleep takes off stress, anxiety and relaxes your mind. It’s the best time to take rest and relax. When you get your bundle of joy in your hands, most of the parents get deprived of sleep.
9. Unprotected Sex: It is recommended by doctors to have regular and unprotected sex if you are planning to conceive.
10. Stop googling and contact an expert: You can google to get information about pregnancy journey, but do not follow those instructions or medications without taking advice from your doctor.
