Bengaluru’s Baptist Hospital has reported two confirmed cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), according to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). This development comes as part of ICMR’s ongoing surveillance efforts to track respiratory illnesses across India.
HMPV, a respiratory virus known to cause symptoms ranging from mild cold-like effects to severe infections in vulnerable populations, has been under scrutiny worldwide. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has reassured the public that India’s healthcare system is equipped to handle respiratory diseases, citing robust surveillance mechanisms and no unusual surge in cases.
In response to concerns over respiratory illness outbreaks in neighbouring China, the Union Health Ministry convened a joint monitoring group meeting on Saturday. The group reviewed reports of increasing respiratory infections in China over recent weeks and evaluated India’s preparedness.
A senior health ministry official quoted by PTI as saying that confirmed that the situation is being “closely monitored” through established channels. The ministry has also requested timely updates from the World Health Organisation (WHO) regarding the situation in China to ensure appropriate responses.
Preliminary assessments from the meeting suggest the rise in respiratory cases in China aligns with the flu season and does not indicate an unprecedented event. However, authorities have stressed the importance of vigilance and the need for validated updates to avoid misinformation.
“HMPV primarily affects the respiratory system, leading to infections in both the upper and lower respiratory tracts. In most people, it presents symptoms similar to a cold or flu—cough, fever, nasal congestion, and sore throat. However, for certain groups, including young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems, it can develop into more severe conditions such as bronchitis or pneumonia,” said BW Healthcare World reached out to Dr Jayalakshmi T.K Senior Consultant, Pulmonology, Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai.
India’s proactive approach, including enhanced monitoring and international collaboration, aims to ensure public safety and readiness to address any potential health challenges.
