India has retained its position as the second largest country to produce PPE kits with the production capacity increased to more than 5 lakh along with 104 lakh N-95 masks produced per day, according to the Ministry of Health.
In 2020, India had already achieved the tag of becoming the second largest manufacturer by producing around 4.5 Lakh PPE Body Coveralls and 32 lakh N-95 masks per day. In 60 days, the PPE industry in India had witnessed 56 times growth.
The COVID crisis enabled India to become self-reliant in terms of indigenously manufacturing PPE kits from being totally reliant on the imports. During the abrupt imposition of lockdown, many manufacturing companies saw huge losses and were close to get shut down, the demand for PPE kits became a new opportunity to revamp the manufacturing industries. Companies like The Trident Group, The Aditya Birla Group, Shahi Exports, Arvind Mills, Paragon Apparels, etc. started manufacturing PPE kits, governed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), IS 17423:2020 for PPE Body Coveralls and IS 9473:2002 for N-95/FFP-2 masks
Today, there are 1100 manufacturers registered for producing PPE Body Coveralls and more than 200 manufacturers for N-95 mask. As per Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, a total of 4.23 crore N-95 masks, 1.77 crore PPE kits have been provided to States/UTs/Central Government Institutions till 30th July, 2021. The boost in the demand and investment in the PPE kit industry has resulted into creating an average market size of around Rs 7000 crore. The global market for PPE kits is worth $52 billion and expected to be over $92 billion in 2025.
Bengaluru is the biggest manufacturer of PPE kits in India.With the aid of using authorized manufacturing tools, it is being manufactured in Phagwara and Ludhiana in Punjab, Kusumnagar and Bhiwandi in Maharashtra, Dungarpur in Rajasthan, Kolkata, Delhi, Noida, Gurugram Tiruppur, Chennai and Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, Ahmedabad and Vadodara in Gujarat and other different places.
