Shift Focus From Weight To BMI

BMI or Body Mass Index is a measure of weight over height. It is a key indicator that determines the level of fat in your body and how healthy you are. In most cases, it can determine your fitness level and how prone you are to developing any chronic diseases. A BMI level of 30 is a benchmark for obesity in both men as well as women. Individuals with a BMI between 25 to 30, are tagged as overweight. An ideal BMI level for men and women is anywhere between 18.5 and 24.9. Anything below 18.5 means that the person is underweight.

According to certain data studies, individuals with BMI levels between 25 and 29 had a 50% risk of type 2 diabetes as compared to people with an ideal BMI of 18.5 to 24.9. With higher levels of BMI, a person is more prone to developing type 2 diabetes, metabolic diseases, hypertension, heart diseases, and high cholesterol. A higher BMI could also have other long-term health risks such as stroke, bone, and joint related issues, osteoarthritis, certain types of cancers like breast, colon and endometrial cancer. There is also a risk of developing high blood pressure. 

Having a normal BMI causes individuals to feel healthier both physically and psychologically. A report in the US stated that 365,000 excess deaths each year, were only due to obesity. Although BMI is not a perfect method in determining individuals overall health and condition, it is a useful starting point and measure for various health-related conditions. Through a BMI check, you can determine your level of fitness and identify what needs to be done to achieve an ideal BMI level through proper fitness routines, including a well-balanced diet and proper health goals.
