Summer Immunity Guide: 4 Ways seniors can build their immune system during the lockdown

During summer, prolonged exposure to the heat and sun can be dangerous for the elderly. Last month, in Chennai, the mercury levels soared beyond 40 degrees Celsius for the first time this year due to loss of moisture caused by Cyclone Amphan. The elderly now, not only need to cope with the heatwave, but also have to protect themselves from the pandemic that is out in full swing. For this, they need to build a healthy immune system, especially those with chronic health conditions.

Understanding the Immune System and Aging

One of the consequences of aging is the decline in the immune system. The elderly (above 60+), often don’t respond well to new or previously encountered infectious diseases like influenza or coronavirus. Unfortunately, their bodies don’t readily respond to vaccinations either.

The immune system is a collection of different types of cells (T-cells) that move through the blood to different body tissues. They are constantly at work surveilling; what they’re looking for is the presence of external microbes. If found, the T-cells fight and defeat the infection before it can multiply and make a person sick.

As a person ages, starting around middle age, the immune system slows down gradually, but when a person reaches 60, the immune system declines sharply. That’s why during summer, doctors suggest elders exercise regularly and eat healthy because even a mild cold can increase the risk of germ invasion.

However, seniors need not worry, there are many ways to keep your body in shape.

Here are the few lifestyle changes that could boost an elders’ immune system throughout summer and even after the lockdown:

Drinking Plenty of Fluids

Don’t wait to feel thirsty. Many older adults tend to lose their sense of thirst as they age, this leads to dehydration, which in turn causes constipation, confusion, bladder infections, and even disorientation.

Therefore, they must drink enough fluids (at least 8 glasses) every day. Moreover, water is one of the best immune boosters for seniors - experts recommend always having a glass of water before going to bed and early in the morning. Incorporating water-based foods like watermelon, soups, and smoothies into a diet will also help boost immunity.

Eating Healthy & Nutritious Meals

Always remember that the T-cells also eat what a person consumes. If one eats nutritious and healthy meals, they will too.

Also, if there is a pre-existing condition such as diabetes or high blood pressure, eating healthy becomes vital. This is because a limited diet deprives the body of iron, zinc, folic acid, vital vitamins, and other micronutrients.

Meeting a nutritionist or healthcare professional, can help identify nutrient sources and supplement diet with multivitamins to boost immunity.

Maintaining Good Hygiene

Good hygiene, though always important, becomes more essential amidst a pandemic and the scorching heat. The main reason for this is sweat.

Excessive sweating can create breeding spots for bacteria, viruses, and fungi. This can lead to several infections. Therefore, keeping the body clean and fresh is crucial. Some ways to stay clean are to frequently wash hands, shower often, and use an antiperspirant or anti-fungal talc.

Exercising Regularly

Just because everyone is under lockdown, it does not mean that exercising should take a backseat. Regular exercise is one of the best immune boosters for seniors. Plus, it lowers blood pressure, controls weight, and improves cardio health.

However, do not think of household chores as exercises. They do provide mobility but they are not wholesome. Also, avoid going physical work during these times, like afternoons. Instead, opt for activities like yoga, or walking around the block in the evenings.

If the elderly can take good care of their health – by getting proper sleep and by having good health practices, then they are giving their immune system the best advantage it can have, no matter what age they are at.
