Fortis Hospital Cunningham Road Achieves Historic Triple Surgery Milestone

The co-existence of heart disease and colon cancer presented a unique challenge in treatment planning, requiring a careful and coordinated surgical approach.

Fortis Hospital Cunningham Road in Bengaluru has made medical history by successfully performing three complex surgeries simultaneously on a single patient. The hospital in a press statement on Wednesday said that this groundbreaking feat, believed to be the first of its kind worldwide, involved Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG), gallbladder stone removal, and colon cancer surgery, all conducted in one session. Led by Dr Vivek Jawali, Chairman of Cardiac Sciences, and Dr Ganesh Shenoy, Director of GI, Minimal Access and Bariatric Surgery, the intricate procedures were completed within a remarkable 7-hour timeframe.

The patient, Kopparam, presented with a medical history of diabetes and heart disease, alongside persistent abdominal pain. Following an ultrasound examination at Fortis Hospital Cunningham Road, it was discovered that Mr Kopparam also had gallstones. However, further evaluations unveiled a more concerning diagnosis: colon cancer. The co-existence of heart disease and colon cancer presented a unique challenge in treatment planning, requiring a careful and coordinated surgical approach.

To ensure the patient's safety, the medical team opted to perform the CABG surgery first, using a specialized technique known as Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass (OPCAB) with four grafts. This approach eliminated the need for a heart-lung machine and allowed for meticulous monitoring of the patient's heart throughout the procedure. Following the successful completion of the cardiac surgery, laparoscopic techniques were employed to perform a laparoscopic extended right hemicolectomy (LERHC) for the colon cancer, alongside a laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) for gallbladder stone removal.

Dr. Vivek Jawali highlighted the importance of the OPCAB technique in ensuring the patient's cardiac stability during the surgery, while Dr. Ganesh Shenoy emphasized the precision and coordination required for the laparoscopic procedures. The comprehensive approach adopted by the medical team minimized surgical risks and facilitated a smooth recovery for the patient.

Mr. Kopparam was discharged from the hospital 15 days post-surgery and has since resumed his normal activities without any complications.

Mr. Akshay Oleti, Business Head of Fortis Hospitals Bengaluru, lauded the exceptional skill and dedication of the medical team, underscoring the hospital's commitment to pushing boundaries and innovation in healthcare.
